(Peak Endorsements and separate units by plant type are not available on CAT policies).

Buy-up levels vary from 50-75% (in increments of 5%) of the inventory at 100% of the price. Growers can select separate coverage levels by plant type. $30 admin fee + premium. Peak Endorsements can be used to reduce the premium.

Nursery Owners!
How well will your plants weather this season? We have specialists in Nursery Stock and many other forms of coverage that your nursery needs, such as greenhouse, equipment, vehicles, health, workers compensation and business interruption. The crop insurance policy for Nurseries covers wholesale nurseries that grow the nursery plants and derive at least 50% of its gross income form the wholesale marketing of such plants. Field grown and container grown practices are considered separate insurable practices. One or both practices may be insured.

Standard nursery containers are rigid containers not less than 1" in diameter at the widest point of the container interior (including trays that contain 200 or fewer individual cells), and above-ground fabric grow bags that are appropriate in size and provide adequate drainage for the plant.

Nursery Insurance Terms

Adverse Weather Conditions
This refers to anything Mother Nature sends your way such as excess rain or floods, windstorm, hurricanes, tornadoes, freezing temperatures and ice.

Failure or Reduction in Power Supply
Brownout or failure of the power supply is covered, if such failure is due to an insurable cause of loss.

Cold Temperature
Loss to cold temperature is not insured, if cold protection is required in the eligible plant list, unless

  • You've installed adequate cold protection equipment or facilities and there is a failure or breakdown of the cold protection equipment or facilities resulting from an insurable cause of loss. (Note: the insured plants must be damaged by cold temperatures and the damage must occur within 72 hours of the failure of such equipment or facilities unless FCIC determines that repair or replacement was not possible between the time of failure or breakdown and the time damaging temperatures occurred.)
  • The lowest temperature or its duration exceeded the ability of the required cold protection equipment to keep the insured plants from sustaining cold damage.

Basic Units by Plant Type
Growers can group plants by plant types which are commonly called "Units" in crop insurance. This means that only the inventory within the "unit" that is damaged is considered when calculating the indemnity. This is a great asset of the buy-up policy.

Collapse / Failure of Buildings / Structures
This is insured if the damage to the building/structures results from an insured cause of loss.

Failure of Plants to Grow to an Expected Size
Failure of plants to grow to an expected size due to any cause of loss is not covered.

Failure of Irrigation Supply
Failure of irrigation water supply is covered, if failure is due to an insured cause of loss that occurs within the insurance period (Note: mechanical breakdown is not covered).

Fire
This is covered, provided weeds and undergrowth in the vicinity of the plants or buildings on your insured site are controlled by chemical or mechanical means.

Good Nursery Practices
The horticultural practices generally in use in the area for nursery plants to make normal progress toward the stage of growth at which marketing can occur and: (1) for conventional practices, generally recognized by agricultural experts for the area as compatible with the nursery plant production practices and weather conditions in the county; or (2) for organic practices, generally recognized by the organic agricultural industry for the area as compatible with the nursery plant production practices and weather conditions in the county or contained in the organic plan.

Marketability Delay
This is covered if such delay results in a reduction in the value of the plants, due to an approved cause of loss that occurs within the insurance period.

Marketability Problems
We cannot insure the inability to market your insured plants as a direct result of quarantine, boycott, or refusal of a buyer to accept production.

to the top

Negligence
Neglect, mismanagement, or wrongdoing by the grower, any family member, or a tenant or employee is not insurable.

to the top

Peak Endorsements
Growers can save money by covering temporary increases in inventory with a Peak Endorsement. This allows the grower to pay premium on the higher inventory value only in the months that it occurs.

to the top

Plant Disease / Insect Infestation
These are not covered by the policy, unless

  1. no effective control measure exists, or
  2. coverage is specifically listed in the Special Provisions

Retained Water
Flooding from water contained by any governmental, public, or private dam or reservoir project is not an insurable cause of loss.
